Reporting to the Manager of Central Teleports, the TTAC and Teleport Services (TTS) Technologist is responsible for the provision of day to day operations and maintenance of the Allan Park Teleport facility, Viasat KA Gateways, and various remote locations, ensuring present serviceability numbers are met or exceeded. \n
Main Responsibilities: Manage the day-to-day technical operations of Telesat’s Allan Park customer uplinks and TTAC facilities to ensure all systems and services remain operational. Through careful planning, develop action plans to maintain high service standards and minimize impact to TTAC and Customer services. Ensure documentation and procedures are up to date and maintain accurate station logs for easy reference to incidents by afterhours TCC staff and on-call TTS support personnel Preventative Monthly Maintenance: Perform monthly checks on services/chains as assigned in the APK Master Maintenance Schedule document. Record results in EMTS (server). Justification to your Manager will be required for any monthly check missed or skipped. This includes other tasks as scheduled for you in the APK Master Maintenance on EMTS3 document and Teleports Knowledgebase System Manage Allan Park TTAC requirements to support IOT/TOS missions. This involves interfacing with space systems personnel to ensure proper hardware, hardware configurations and documentation are in place for L-minus checks and mission day. Develop resource support schedules based on updated TOS sequence of events data to ensure personal resources are in place to support missions Provide TCC after hours TTS support in an on-call capacity to provide over the phone support and/or call in Thorough understanding of complex data networks and backhaul configurations. Programming and maintenance of iDirect equipment Perform preventative and corrective maintenance to IF and RF hardware such as up/down converters, klystron high power amplifiers (KHPA), traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTA), modulators and multiplexers Participate in the installation and commissioning of new and expansion services with engineering personnel, demonstrating thorough understanding of the systems Complete pertinent documentation associated with maintenance and/or installation tasks. Responsible for the operations and maintenance of Power, HVAC, and supervisory and control systems Have the ability to work directly with Telesat customers and/or third-party contractors Ability to work in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision
Education & Experience Required: 3-year Electronics/Telecommunications Technologist Diploma, or the equivalent Understanding of Network fundamentals such as TCP/IP and LAN/WAN Familiarity with complex IP networks, routing protocols and VPN technology Familiar with various types of telecommunications test equipment Ability to demonstrate solid troubleshooting skills and prioritize the resolution of events Knowledge of Microsoft and Unix based operating systems, applications and tools Familiarity with Radio Frequency (RF) equipment and systems Must have strong interpersonal and customer service skills
Equipment Used: Spectrum Analyzers, power meters, DVM’s, Network analyzers, various power tools, Telehandlers, ladders etc.
Decision Making & Supervision: Decision Making The position requires an individual who is able to take the initiative and make decisions required in implementing system modifications and enhancements. Good analytical and problem-solving skills are necessary to make informed decisions and to implement earth station design changes. This position may require the individual to provide direction to personnel assigned on specific projects. Supervision Exercised Ensure preventative and corrective maintenance is performed in a safe manner in accordance with labour laws, safety practices and Telesat’s policies. Oversee technologist/vendors and installation staff who are assisting with the implementation of projects and systems.
Working Conditions: Comfortable indoor office environment Able to perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions across all four seasons Willing to travel occasionally, both domestically and internationally, as required Participate in a rotating on-call schedule after hours and on weekends, with the ability to respond on-site within one hour Standard work hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; shift work may be required to support maintenance tasks or other facility activities Working independently in an unsupervised environment is essential for this role
