Overview of role:

The Cargo operations Lead will report to the Cargo Support manager and be responsible for formulating, developing and implementing operational plans for the cargo team on shift. This leader is responsible for working closely with all stakeholders within the OCC to protect cargo commercial and operational interests.

As operations lead there is an expectation to influence stakeholders during IROPs while ensuring all cargo operational and commercial interests are optimized for both WestJet (passenger and freighter) and WestJet Encore. This role will provide direction and support to Operations Coordinators on shift, all warehouse staff, and the cargo ramp operations. The cargo operations lead will ensure that all procedures and communications are consistent and efficient, service failures are recorded, and provide day-of frontline supervision, leadership, and mentoring.

The key deliverables include:

  • Lead the Cargo Operations teams based in the OCC and facilitate effective leadership on shift 24x7
  • Responsible to provide hands-on guidance, cargo operational expertise & leadership to the OCC and Warehouse teams and to delegate appropriate authority as & when necessary
  • Ensure implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and controls to fulfill procedural/regulatory requirements for freighter handling.
  • Accountable for conducting/supporting investigations on all safety related incidents
  • Accountable for day-of ULD movement requests and support
  • Responsible for ensuring freighter capacity is optimized to maximum on shift by connecting joining and transfer cargo
  • Accountable to ensure coordination of slots, regulatory approval, and handling of last-minute request for freighter operations as required by charters or adhoc operations
  • Accountable for developing and maintaining strong working relationships with various internal and external stakeholders as it pertains to standard operating procedures, day of operational challenges, performance service failures, irregular operations, etc.
  • Responsible for working closely with the Cargo Full Freighter Management team and Cargo Network Planning team to support commercial interests
  • Responsible to ensure all Operations Coordination processes and communication flows are effective on shift
  • Accountable on shift to provide direction to manage the cargo product on WestJet (passenger and freighters), and WestJet Encore flights

Experience and qualifications:

  • 3+ years of relevant Cargo work experience and previous work experience in airline operations
  • Must be knowledgeable of applicable cargo handling and Transport Canada regulations
  • Thorough knowledge of ramp operations and freighter handling operations
  • Knowledge of warehouse operations and ramp operations is required
  • Ability to build and influence relationships
  • Must be detailed and driven with the ability to process information quickly while understanding the overriding goals
  • Excellent presentation skills with the ability to communicate information that tells a story, highlights key insights, and influences business decisions
  • Proven success in independently meeting tight deadlines in a fast paced and continuously evolving work environment
  • Experience in enhancing operational efficiency and safety
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and handle high call and email volumes
  • Ability to support our 24/7/365 Operations Control Center by being flexible and able to work early mornings, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays; through shift work
