The Kativik Regional Government (KRG) is a supra-municipal organization with jurisdiction over the territory of Québec located north of the 55th parallel. The KRG is currently seeking to recruit a professional and motivated candidate to work in Kuujjuaq, in the capacity of;

Environment Specialist, Transportation

(Maternity-leave replacement, one year, full-time)

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Transportation, the Environment Specialist, Transportation will be working in collaboration with the Renewable Resources, Environment, Lands and Parks Department to ensure the compliance of environmental laws and regulations throughout the 14 airports and maritime infrastructures in Nunavik. More specifically, the Environmental Specialist will:

  • Provide assistance, expertise and training in environment in general for the 14 airports and maritime infrastructures;
  • Follow-up of contaminant spills, site rehabilitation and contaminated soil or water treatment;
  • Implement plans, policies, programs and regulations to control environmental effects resulting from airport and maritime operations and infrastructures;
  • Create, update and implement documents, procedures, forms, records and training programs in order to ensure the that regulatory compliance tasks are carried out by the Transportation Department employees;
  • keep records in order to verify that tasks are been carried out such as operational control activities on reservoir storage; management of hazardous materials; maintenance of fuel; conservation of streams; management of snow disposal sites; wildlife management, etc.
  • Create and include an environmental emergency plan in the airport's emergency action plan;
  • Implement of hazardous waste management practices and assist in the implement the residual materials management plan;
  • Complete periodical environmental inspections and audits in all KRG Airports and maritime infrastructures including the analysis and provide recommendations on the appropriate applicable corrective measures;
  • Manage other environmental programs including: Noise, Wildlife, Air and Water Quality and Material Management;
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Required qualifications:

  • University degree in environmental studies or in a related field (a master degree in environmental studies or in a related field would be considered an asset);
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a related field;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently with limited supervision;
  • Strong team work and relationship management competencies;
  • Good understanding of Aboriginal issues and the North in general is considered an asset;
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in at least two of the following languages: Inuktitut, English, French;
  • Working knowledge of computer software applications (Microsoft Office 2010);
  • Ability to travel frequently throughout Nunavik.

Salary: Min; $39,729/year, Max: $67,565/year Class 8
