Overview of role: 

WestJet is seeking a Software Developer reporting into our Digital office. This individual can exhibit a high standard of excellence, enjoys challenges, and is results-driven. The incumbent must be highly motivated and demonstrate the ability to work in an agile environment. 

As a Software Developer, you will create and maintain the delivery of services to support the application programming interfaces (APIs). You will be responsible for maximizing code reusability while also considering design, deployment, and testability. You will also be acting as a DevOps engineer designing, implementing, deploying, and supporting infrastructure as code to deliver APIs to our users. This position requires an energetic self-starter with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn and contribute to a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others are essential.

Moreover, you will be able to participate in the following areas:

  • Apply industry-standard processes, practices, and techniques;
  • Lead the development team and business stakeholders to develop appropriate software solutions that meet WestJet’s business, technical and quality requirements;
  • Coach and mentor to other developers.

Key deliverables include: 

  • Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance systems that support the digital functions of the company 

  • Design and document APIs, leveraging a standard API documentation framework (OpenAPI)  

  • Leverage existing API design patterns or modify them to maintain organizational consistency 

  • Lead the development of new software technology and initiatives which may include, but not limited to code architecture, development, unit testing, and other requirements   

  • Automate and document troubleshooting of production applications  

  • Implement and design CI/CD pipelines to automate the delivery of our APIs

  • Ensure that all APIs are fully tested in an automated framework, including functional and performance tests 

  • Focus API solution delivery to use cloud-based solutions

  • Actively participate and provide technical expertise for the creation, implementation, and ongoing evolution of WestJet’s design and development methodologies, coding standards, and style guidelines

Experience and qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required

  • Minimum 3- 6 years Software Engineering experience

  • Experience and knowledge in the following areas is required:

  • Developing RESTful APIs as microservices

  • Node.js web frameworks (hapi, express)

  • Continuous integration, testing, and deployment

  • Implementing advanced monitoring for platforms and applications

  • Infrastructure as code (e.g. terraform)

  • Building and deploying Docker containers

  • Experience and knowledge in the following areas is desired:

  • Java Springboot web application development

  • Kubernetes

  • Linux administration
